What this means for international athletes

  • Your marks drive the calendar. Coaches recruit on marks from your penultimate outdoor season and your final indoor season, so plan your racing around them.
  • Roster spots fill up. NCAA Division I teams now have roster limits of 45 per gender in track and field and 17 in cross country, so getting on coaches' lists early matters. Read how roster limits affect recruiting.
  • Paperwork takes time. Eligibility Center registration, transcripts and student visas can take months, so start them in your final autumn.

Frequently asked questions

When can US college track coaches contact international athletes?

NCAA Division I coaches can start calling, texting, emailing and messaging you from 15 June after your US sophomore year, which is the summer two years before you finish school (end of Year 11 in England and Wales, S4 in Scotland, Year 10 in Australia or Year 11 in New Zealand). Division II coaches can send electronic messages at any time. NAIA and junior college coaches have no contact restrictions.

When can I take official visits?

In Division I you can take official, paid-for visits from 1 August before your US junior year (the start of your second-to-last school year). In Division II, official visits and off-campus contact start from 15 June before your junior year.

When do track and field athletes sign?

Since the National Letter of Intent was scrapped in 2024, you sign a written athletics aid agreement directly with the university. For most sports other than football, the early signing period for athletes finishing school in 2027 opens on 11 November 2026. Many track and field athletes, especially internationals, sign in the spring of their final year once their indoor marks and grades are in.

Is it too late to start in my final year of school?

Not usually. Plenty of international track and field athletes are recruited in their final year, and some programmes still have roster spots and aid in the spring and summer. The earlier you start, the more choice you have.

What is a dead period?

A dead period is a set of dates when NCAA Division I coaches cannot meet you in person, although they can still message and call you. Dead periods usually fall around November, the December holidays and the major championships.

Do these dates apply to the NAIA and junior college?

No. The NAIA and NJCAA do not have the same contact calendar, so their coaches can talk to you at any age. You still need to register with the NAIA Eligibility Center or meet junior college requirements before you compete.

Last updated 1 October 2026. Dates are general guidance and can change; always check with the coach or the university's compliance office.
