How do sports scholarship agencies work?
What an agency actually does
- Assessment. Your child's times or marks and grades, and which levels (NCAA Division I, Division II, NAIA, junior college) are realistic.
- Profile and outreach. Presenting your child to the coaches most likely to want them, and following up.
- Offers. Helping you compare packages on the total you will pay, and negotiate where appropriate.
- Eligibility and admissions. NCAA Eligibility Center or NAIA registration, transcripts, tests and university applications.
- Visa and arrival. The I-20, F-1 student visa and preparation for moving.
How agencies are paid
Most agencies charge families for a package of services. Prices and what is included vary a lot, so compare what you get, not just the price. At Olympic Sports Scholarships there are four packages, from Basic (evaluation and identifying opportunities) to Performance (full support plus nutrition, strength and conditioning and sports psychology). Every family starts with a free assessment, so you know where your child stands before you pay for anything.
Do you need an agency?
No. Families can contact coaches directly, and some athletes do very well that way. What an agency adds is knowledge of the system, relationships with coaches, and time. If your child is a strong athlete with a clear target and you have the time to manage hundreds of emails, you may not need one.
Red flags
- Guaranteed scholarships or placements. No one can promise funding: it depends on the athlete, their grades and the university's needs.
- Pressure to sign now because "places are limited".
- Little track record: no reviews, no named athletes, no references.
- Vague claims about connections with no examples.
- Unclear terms: you should know exactly what is included and what happens if no suitable offer comes.

Questions to ask any agency
- How many athletes in my child's event have you placed, and where?
- Can we speak to families you have worked with?
- Who will we actually work with, and what is their background?
- What exactly is included, and what is not?
- What happens if my child does not receive a suitable offer?
