What does a US sports scholarship cover?
What a full scholarship covers
Every US university publishes a cost of attendance: the full cost of one academic year. A full athletic scholarship, sometimes called a full ride, can cover all of it:
- Tuition and fees
- Housing (a room on or near campus)
- Meals
- Required books and course materials
- At many Division I schools, a cost-of-attendance allowance towards other living costs
Partial scholarships are the norm in athletics
In track and field and cross country, most athletes receive a partial scholarship that is topped up with other aid:
- NCAA Division II programmes share a fixed amount of scholarship money across the team: 12.6 full scholarships for track and field and cross country combined, split between athletes.
- NCAA Division I changed in July 2025. Schools that opted into the House v. NCAA settlement no longer have a scholarship cap. Instead they have roster limits (45 for track and field and 17 for cross country) and can fund any athlete on the roster. Some programmes now offer more money; roster places are more competitive.
- NAIA and junior colleges also offer athletic scholarships, with their own limits.
Stacking: how packages get close to full
An athletic scholarship can usually be combined with academic scholarships, international student grants and other aid, up to the cost of attendance. Strong grades matter: a good academic award can be worth thousands of dollars a year. Our GPA calculators show how your child's grades convert.
What is usually not covered
- Return flights at the start and end of each year
- Student visa costs, including the visa application fee and the SEVIS fee
- Health insurance, if it is not part of the package
- Personal spending, a phone plan and kit not supplied by the team
- Summer months, if your child stays in the US to train
Is the scholarship guaranteed every year?
Athletic scholarships are usually awarded one year at a time and renewed. At NCAA Division I, if your child receives athletics aid in their first year and still has eligibility, the school cannot reduce, cancel or decline to renew it for athletics reasons, including injury, performance or roster decisions. Rules elsewhere differ, so get the terms in writing.
How to compare two offers
| Offer A | Offer B | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost of attendance | $80,000 | $35,000 |
| Athletic scholarship | 50% | 25% |
| Academic award | none | $10,000 |
| You pay each year | $40,000 | $16,250 |
The bigger percentage is not always the better deal. Always compare what you will pay after all aid.
