Cross Country Scholarships in the USA

US universities offer athletic scholarships to distance runners who can score for their cross country team in the autumn and race 1500m to 10,000m on the track in the spring. We have placed more than 250 middle-distance and distance athletes on US scholarships. Check where your times fit below, then book a free assessment.

Recommendation from our Director

“The first thing to get into your head as an international runner is that in the US, time matters. American coaches recruit on the clock far more than British athletes expect. Their own high school runners race 5K cross country, mostly on flat, dry courses, so a coach already has a 5K benchmark in their head. That is why I tell every distance runner to get a valid 5K road time on a measured course. It is the easiest comparison a US coach can make, and it can massively improve your value to them. By valid, I mean a course certified by the governing body, so the result is officially recognised and appears in the rankings. parkrun can count, but only alongside other races that back it up.”

“Cross country results need more care. You can't always compare one course with another. National championships in countries with big running populations, like England, France, Germany or Australia, carry real weight. Winning or placing well at nationals in a smaller country often doesn't mean much to a US coach. So we always recommend backing up your cross country results with a strong 5K road performance.”

These are guide marks from the athletes we have placed. They show the level of programme a time suggests, not a guaranteed offer. A 5K road time on a measured course, or a track 5000m, is the fairest comparison for a US coach.

* College cross country marks are flat, dry-course equivalents. Courses can't always be compared: terrain, mud, hills and exact distance all change times, so treat these rows as a rough guide and back them up with a 5K road or track time. National championship placings also carry different weight depending on the country: nationals in England, France, Germany or Australia count for far more than nationals in a smaller country.
Track marks use fully automatic timing.

How US cross country works

8K and 10KMen race 8K in the college regular season and 10K at the Division I regionals and nationals.
6KWomen race 6K in college, including at the NCAA and NAIA championships.
August to NovemberThe season finishes in late November. The 2025 NCAA Division I final was on 22 November.
17 per teamThe Division I roster limit for men's and women's cross country from 2025-26, at schools in the House settlement.

At those Division I schools, sport-specific scholarship caps ended on 1 July 2025. A programme can now fund every athlete on its roster, up to the roster limit. Before that, cross country shared the track and field limit of 12.6 scholarships for men and 18 for women. Division II, NAIA and junior colleges still work to their own scholarship limits. Most distance runners are recruited for both cross country and track, so one offer often covers three seasons: cross country, indoor and outdoor track.

Our cross country athletes

George CouttieGreat Britain · University of Charleston (D2) to Virginia Tech (D1)

European U20 Cross Country silver medallist (2024) and NCAA indoor Mile silver medallist. When George first contacted us he wasn't qualifying for English Schools. We have worked with him for more than four years.

Alicia FinnisSalisbury, England · Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to Ole Miss (D1, SEC)

Southland Conference Cross Country Student-Athlete of the Year 2025, with a 3.91 GPA in civil engineering. She was 4th at the 2025 Southland Championship over 6K in 20:50.7. We helped her transfer to Ole Miss, and she finished 3rd over 5K in 17:28.02 in her first race for the Rebels, at the Memphis Twilight Classic in September 2026.

Bradley GiblinGreat Britain · Iona to Eastern Kentucky (D1)

European U20 3000m bronze medallist (2023). At Iona he ran 23:42.7 for 8K and 29:50.0 for 10K, and raced the 10K at the 2025 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. We have guided Bradley from his start at Iona to Eastern Kentucky, and helped put him in a strong position with his overall financial package.

UK and US cross country: what changes

British cross country runs through the winter, across mud, hills and courses of every length. US college cross country is an autumn team sport. Races are usually on faster, grassier courses, and the top five runners score for the team. You arrive in August and race almost straight away, so your summer training at home is your preparation. The step up in distance is biggest for men, from junior races to 8K and 10K.

US high school runners race 5K cross country, mostly on flat, dry courses. That is the benchmark in a college coach's head, and it is why a 5K road time travels so well. A muddy English cross country result is much harder for a coach to read.

How to get a cross country scholarship

  1. Know your level. Use the Standards Engine above with your best 5K road or 5000m track time.
  2. Race a valid 5K road. A 5K on a measured road course is the easiest comparison a US coach can make. If you don't have one, it is often the quickest way to raise your value.
  3. Start early. Coaches build cross country squads a year or more ahead, so begin in Year 12 or its equivalent if you can.
  4. Get your academics in order. Grades and test requirements affect both eligibility and the size of your package.
  5. Build a clear profile. Track PBs, cross country championship results, training volume and progression over two or three seasons.
  6. Talk to the right coaches. We match you to programmes where you would score in the top five and develop, not just where you would make the roster.

Cross country scholarship FAQs

Does cross country give scholarships?

Yes. NCAA Division I, Division II, NAIA and junior college programmes all offer athletic scholarships to cross country runners. Most distance runners are recruited for cross country and track together. At Division I schools in the House settlement there is no longer a sport-specific scholarship cap, only a roster limit of 17 per team.

What is a good 5K time for college cross country?

As a guide from our placements, men running 5000m on the track in about 14:40 or faster are in range for mid-major Division I programmes, and 15:30 for junior colleges. For women the equivalent marks are about 17:10 and 18:25. Cross country course times vary too much to compare directly, so a 5K road time on a measured course is often the most useful mark to show a US coach.

How many cross country scholarships are there?

From the 2025-26 season, Division I schools in the House settlement can fund every athlete on the roster, up to 17 men and 17 women in cross country and 45 of each in track and field. Before that, cross country shared the track and field limit of 12.6 scholarships for men and 18 for women.

Do US coaches look at cross country results or track times?

Both, but time carries the most weight. US coaches can compare a 5K road time on a measured course, or a track 5000m, directly with their own runners, who race 5K high school cross country on mostly flat, dry courses. Cross country results help too, but courses can't always be compared, and national championships only carry real weight in countries with big running populations, such as England, France, Germany or Australia.

When is the US college cross country season?

From late August to November. The 2025 NCAA Division I Championships were held on 22 November and the NAIA Championships on 21 November. In college, men race 8K in the regular season and 10K at the Division I regionals and nationals. Women race 6K.
