How international athletes from the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Europe register with the NCAA Eligibility Center, what grades they need and which documents to send.
The short answer
International athletes need an NCAA Eligibility Center Certification account (about $180) to compete in Division I or II. You need 16 approved core courses with a 2.3 core-course GPA for Division I or 2.2 for Division II. No SAT or ACT score is required.

What the NCAA Eligibility Center does
Before you can compete at an NCAA Division I or II university, the Eligibility Center certifies two things: that your academic record meets the initial-eligibility standard, and that you are still an amateur. From 2026 it also applies the new age-based eligibility model when you first enrol.

Division I athletes with only international academic records do not need to meet the 10/7 core-course progression rule. Division III universities set their own academic standards.
How to register: step by step
- Create a free Profile Page account on the NCAA Eligibility Center website.
- Upgrade to an Academic and Athletic Certification account (about $180 for international students) when Division I or II coaches are recruiting you.
- List your sports history, including clubs, national teams, prize money and any sponsorship, for your amateurism certification.
- Send your records: transcripts or results from your ninth year of schooling onwards, proof of graduation and a certified line-by-line English translation of anything not in English. Universities can upload documents directly; otherwise email PDFs to the Eligibility Center.
- Request final certification once you have your final results and proof of graduation.

Do international students need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center?
Yes, if you want to compete at an NCAA Division I or II university. The Eligibility Center certifies your academic record and amateur status. Division III athletes need an athletic-only certification.
How much does the NCAA Eligibility Center cost for international students?
A Profile Page account is free. An Academic and Athletic Certification account, needed for Division I and II, is $180 for students outside the US and Canada, based on the fees published at the time of writing.
Do I need the SAT or ACT for the NCAA?
No. NCAA Division I and II no longer require a standardised test score for initial eligibility. Individual universities may still ask for test scores or English tests for admission.
What GPA do I need for NCAA Division I?

What documents do I need to send?

Do GCSEs and A-levels count as core courses?
The NCAA uses country-specific guidance to decide which qualifications count and how they are graded. For UK students it reviews GCSE and A-level results, and similar rules apply to Australian, New Zealand and European qualifications. We check this for every athlete we work with.
