European grades to US GPA calculator

The short answer
To convert European grades to a US GPA, each subject grade is placed on a 4.0 scale and averaged. As a guide, a German 1 or 2 counts as an A or B, 16 or more out of 20 in France is an A, and 9 or 10 out of 10 in Spain or Italy is an A. NCAA Division I needs a core-course GPA of at least 2.3.

Which years count
US universities look at your last four years of secondary school through your school reports and your national school-leaving certificate, such as the Abitur, Baccalauréat, Bachillerato, maturità or Leaving Certificate. Anything not in English needs a certified line-by-line translation.
What GPA do US universities need?
These are minimums to compete. Many universities, and the best academic scholarships, ask for more. A higher GPA also widens the list of programmes that can recruit you.
Frequently asked questions
How do German grades convert to a US GPA?
As a guide, a 1 (sehr gut) converts to an A (4.0), a 2 to a B (3.0), a 3 to a C (2.0) and a 4 to a D (1.0). Grades 5 and 6 count as an F. In the Oberstufe, 13 to 15 points count as an A.
How do French grades out of 20 convert to GPA?
As a guide, 16 to 20 converts to an A (4.0), 13 to 15.9 to a B (3.0), 10 to 12.9 to a C (2.0) and 8 to 9.9 to a D (1.0).
How do Italian and Spanish grades convert to GPA?
As a guide, 9 or 10 out of 10 converts to an A (4.0) and 7 to 8 to a B (3.0). In Italy a 6 is a C (2.0); in Spain 6 to 6.9 is a C and 5 to 5.9 a D (1.0).
Do I need an English test?
If English is not your first language, most universities ask for an English test such as the TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo English Test. Required scores vary by university. Athletes schooled in English, such as in Ireland, usually do not need one.
What GPA do I need for a US sports scholarship?
For NCAA Division I you need 16 approved core courses with a core-course GPA of at least 2.3, and for Division II at least 2.2. The NAIA typically looks for a GPA of about 2.0, while Division III universities and junior colleges set their own entry standards.
Do I need the SAT or ACT?
No. SAT and ACT scores have not been needed for NCAA Division I and II eligibility since January 2023. Standards can change, so we check the current rules with every athlete.
How accurate is this GPA calculator?
Our calculator uses a conservative scale (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0) so you do not overestimate. Official evaluations are made by the NCAA Eligibility Center and each university, and some admissions offices read A-level and IB grades more generously.
