US athletics scholarships for Irish athletes

By Nathan Gillis, founder of Olympic Sports Scholarships and a former NCAA Division I athlete at Lamar and La Salle · Updated October 2026
THE SHORT ANSWERIrish athletes are well placed for US track and cross country scholarships. You are schooled in English, so most universities will not ask for an English test, and US coaches know Irish distance running well. Coaches recruit on your times and your 5th-year results; your Leaving Cert results in August complete your eligibility.

Why US coaches recruit Irish athletes

  • Cross country is built in. Irish athletes grow up racing cross country through the winter, and the US college year starts with a cross country season in the autumn, followed by indoor and outdoor track.
  • English-language schooling. Athletes schooled in English, as in Ireland, usually do not need the TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo English Test.
  • No SAT required for eligibility. The NCAA no longer uses test scores for initial eligibility. Some universities still ask for one for admission, and we plan that in once we know your target schools.
  • Every level recruits. NCAA Division I, Division II, NAIA and junior colleges all offer athletics scholarships, so there is a realistic level for a wide range of times and marks.

What your Leaving Cert means for NCAA eligibility

The NCAA Eligibility Center judges your academics on your core subjects from the ninth year of school onwards. In Ireland that means from 3rd year (Junior Cycle) through to the Leaving Cert.

NCAA Division I NCAA Division II
Core courses 16 16
Minimum core-course GPA 2.3 2.2
Documents School reports from 3rd year on, plus proof of graduation Same

The timing catch. Leaving Cert results came out on 21 August in 2026, after many US universities start their autumn term. Coaches therefore recruit you on your school reports and predicted grades. Your final results then complete your eligibility.

What to do:

  1. Keep every school report from 3rd year onwards, including Transition Year if your school issues one.
  2. Convert your grades with our European GPA calculator, then check your standing with the NCAA eligibility calculator.
  3. Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center in 5th year. Our guide to the Eligibility Center for international athletes walks through it.

The recruiting timeline in Irish school years

Irish school year US equivalent What to do
3rd year (Junior Cycle) 9th grade Grades start counting for NCAA eligibility. Race as often as you can.
Transition Year 10th grade Check your times on the Standards Engine and take the free assessment. Division I coaches can contact you from 15 June after this year.
5th year 11th grade Register with the Eligibility Center. Email coaches with results and race video. Most recruiting conversations happen this year.
Summer before 6th year Coaches build their lists for next year. Plan official visits.
6th year 12th grade Official visits, written offers and signing (autumn to spring). University applications, then the student visa. Leaving Cert in June, results in August.

Cross country first

Your cross country record is recruiting evidence. Schools' and national championship results, inter-county races and any international vests all go on your profile, alongside your track times.

  • Division I programmes that opted into the 2025 settlement can carry up to 17 cross country athletes and 45 track and field athletes, and can fund any athlete on the roster.
  • Distance runners usually compete in all three seasons: cross country, indoor and outdoor.
  • Compare yourself with what coaches look for: 1500m, 5000m and steeplechase standards, and our cross country scholarships guide.

Costs for Irish families

At home, the student contribution charge is up to €2,350 a year after Budget 2027 cut it by €150. Accommodation and living costs come on top, and for a student living away from home they are usually the bigger bill.

In the US, the cost depends on the offer. Every university publishes a cost of attendance, and most athletics scholarships are partial, combined with academic awards and grants. The figure that matters is what you pay each year after all aid, so compare offers on that, never on the scholarship percentage.

Quick answers

Can Irish athletes get athletics scholarships in the USA?

Yes. Irish track, cross country and field event athletes earn scholarships at NCAA Division I, Division II, NAIA and junior colleges. Coaches recruit on times and marks, school results and how much an athlete is still improving.

Do Irish students need the SAT or an English test?

The NCAA no longer uses test scores for initial eligibility, though some universities still ask for one for admission. Athletes schooled in English, as in Ireland, usually do not need an English test.

Are Leaving Cert results too late for US universities?

No. Coaches recruit on school reports and predicted grades, and offers are usually made before the Leaving Cert. Your final results, out in late August, complete your NCAA eligibility.

Does Transition Year affect NCAA eligibility?

Transition Year does not stop you being eligible. The NCAA looks at schooling from 3rd year onwards, so keep any Transition Year reports in case the Eligibility Center asks for them.

What times do Irish athletes need for a US scholarship?

It depends on the event and the level. Our free Standards Engine shows the times and marks coaches look for from top Division I programmes down to junior college.

How much does a US athletics scholarship cost an Irish family?

It depends on the offer. Compare what you will pay each year after all scholarships and grants, and budget separately for flights, the visa fee and the SEVIS fee.
