The short answer
US universities do not use your ATAR to work out your GPA. They convert your subject grades from Year 9 to Year 12 onto a 4.0 scale and average them: as a guide, an A counts as 4.0, a B as 3.0, a C as 2.0 and a D as 1.0. NCAA Division I needs a core-course GPA of at least 2.3.

Which years count
US universities look at your last four years of high school, which for Australian students is Year 9 to Year 12. Your ATAR on its own is not used for your US GPA: universities use your subject results and school reports instead.
What GPA do US universities need?
These are minimums to compete. Many universities, and the best academic scholarships, ask for more. A higher GPA also widens the list of programmes that can recruit you.
Frequently asked questions
Does my ATAR count for a US GPA?
No. US universities and the NCAA use your subject grades from Year 9 to Year 12, not your ATAR. A strong ATAR still helps with admissions and academic scholarships.
How do Australian A to E grades convert to GPA?
As a guide, an A converts to 4.0, a B to 3.0, a C to 2.0 and a D to 1.0 on the US scale, with an E counting as an F. Your GPA is the average across your subjects.
Which school years do US universities look at for Australian students?
Year 9 to Year 12. Your Year 9 and 10 reports count, so it pays to keep grades up before senior school.
What GPA do I need for a US sports scholarship?
For NCAA Division I you need 16 approved core courses with a core-course GPA of at least 2.3, and for Division II at least 2.2. The NAIA typically looks for a GPA of about 2.0, while Division III universities and junior colleges set their own entry standards.
When would I start at a US university after Year 12?
Most Australians finish Year 12 in November and start in the US the following August. Some universities also offer a January (spring) start.
Do I need the SAT or ACT?
No. SAT and ACT scores have not been needed for NCAA Division I and II eligibility since January 2023. Standards can change, so we check the current rules with every athlete.
How accurate is this GPA calculator?
Our calculator uses a conservative scale (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0) so you do not overestimate. Official evaluations are made by the NCAA Eligibility Center and each university, and some admissions offices read A-level and IB grades more generously.
