NAIA eligibility rules for international athletes (2026)

Everything international athletes need to know about NAIA eligibility: four seasons in 10 semesters, no age limit, the academic standard for freshmen and how to register from the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand or Europe.

The short answer

NAIA athletes get four seasons of competition within their first 10 semesters of full-time college attendance, with no age limit. Freshmen qualify with a 2.3 GPA, or two of an 18 ACT or 970 SAT, a 2.0 GPA and a top-half class ranking. International registration costs $170.

Based on the new 2026 regulations. This guide reflects the NCAA's new age-based eligibility model, adopted in 2026, and the NAIA's current rules, which the NAIA is reviewing. Rules and details can change and exceptions apply. It is general guidance, not an official eligibility decision: always confirm with the NCAA or NAIA Eligibility Center or the university's compliance office.

Four seasons in 10 semesters

The NAIA counts terms of full-time college attendance, not your age. You have 10 semesters (or 15 quarters) of full-time study in which to use your four seasons. Full-time study at a university at home counts towards the 10 semesters, but school and further education courses such as A-levels and BTECs do not.

Because there is no age limit, a gap year does not use NAIA eligibility. That makes the NAIA a strong option for athletes whose NCAA five-year window has already started.

Academic requirements for freshmen

If you have not attended university, you qualify academically with a 2.3 or higher GPA on a 4.0 scale, or by meeting two of these three:

  1. A minimum of 18 on the ACT or 970 on the SAT.
  2. A minimum overall high school GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  3. Graduating in the top half of your high school class.

Registering as an international student

  1. Create your NAIA Eligibility Center account and pay the $170 international registration fee.
  2. Buy an InCred evaluation of your academic records.
  3. Send your records in the original language and a literal, word-for-word English translation. Translations do not need to be certified or official.
  4. Disclose all competition since leaving high school, including club and national team events.
  5. Submit everything at least two months before your start date.

Is the NAIA changing to five years?

The NAIA is studying a move to five seasons of competition, and age limits are part of the discussion. It has not published a final proposal. We will update this page and our eligibility calculator if the rules change.

Frequently asked questions

How many years of eligibility do you get in the NAIA?

NAIA athletes get four seasons of competition in each sport, which must be used within their first 10 semesters (or 15 quarters) of full-time college attendance.

Does the NAIA have an age limit?

No. The NAIA currently has no age limit, so time out of education, such as a gap year, does not use NAIA eligibility. The NAIA is discussing a five-season model and age limits are part of that discussion, but nothing has been adopted.

What grades do I need for the NAIA?

Incoming freshmen need a 2.3 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale, or two of these three: 18 on the ACT or 970 on the SAT, an overall high school GPA of 2.0, or graduating in the top half of their class.

How much does NAIA registration cost for international students?

The NAIA Eligibility Center's one-time, non-refundable international registration fee is $170 (it rose from $160 in September 2025). International students also need to buy an InCred evaluation of their academic records.

When should international students register with the NAIA?

The NAIA advises most international students to register after graduating or at the end of their academic year, with all records submitted at least two months before their start date.

Does club or national team competition count as a NAIA season?

It can. After high school, students are charged seasons for collegiate-level competition and for professional-level outside competition, and some amateur competitions can count. Disclose all competition to the NAIA Eligibility Center.

Is the NAIA changing to five seasons?

The NAIA is studying a move to five seasons of competition, possibly with age limits. It has not been adopted, so four seasons in 10 semesters is still the rule.
