US athletics scholarships for Scottish athletes

By Nathan Gillis, founder of Olympic Sports Scholarships and a former NCAA Division I athlete at Lamar and La Salle · Updated October 2026
THE SHORT ANSWERScottish athletes can earn US track, cross country and athletics scholarships at every level, from NCAA Division I to junior college. US universities judge your academics on National 5s, Highers and Advanced Highers, and your results arrive in early August, in time for an August start. Coaches recruit on your times and marks, your improvement and your grades, usually during S5.

Why Scotland is a good fit for US college athletics

  • Cross country. Scottish athletes race cross country through the winter, and the US college year starts with a cross country season in the autumn.
  • English-language schooling, so you will not usually need an English test.
  • No SAT needed for NCAA eligibility. Some universities still ask for one for admission, and we plan that in once we know your target schools.
  • A track record. Our founder, Nathan Gillis, was born in Scotland and was recruited to NCAA Division I by a Scottish coach at Lamar University. Read his story.

National 5s, Highers and NCAA eligibility

US universities look at your record from the ninth year of school onwards, which in Scotland means S3 to S6.

School year Qualification What it does for you
S3 and S4 National 5s At least five National 5 passes show you have completed secondary school
S5 Highers Extend your record and raise your GPA
S6 Advanced Highers or more Highers Further strengthen your record

Your grades are converted into a US GPA. NCAA Division I needs 16 approved core courses with a core-course GPA of at least 2.3, and Division II at least 2.2. Only full National Courses count, not individual units. Convert your grades with our GPA calculator, then check your standing with the NCAA eligibility calculator.

Timing. In 2026, Scottish exams ran from 22 April to 2 June and results came out on 4 August, before most US terms start. Coaches recruit you on your results so far and your predicted grades.

The recruiting timeline from S3 to S6

Scottish school year US equivalent What to do
S3 9th grade Grades start counting. Race as often as you can, on the track and at cross country.
S4 10th grade Take the free assessment and check your times on the Standards Engine. Division I coaches can contact you from 15 June after this year.
S5 11th grade The main recruiting year: register with the NCAA Eligibility Center, email coaches, plan visits. Some athletes go to the US after S5.
S6 12th grade Offers and signing, university applications and the student visa. Start in August.

Costs for Scottish families

Scottish-domiciled students studying in Scotland have their tuition fee, £1,820 a year at the University of Glasgow for 2026/27, paid by SAAS if they are eligible. That makes the comparison different from England: the question is less about tuition and more about living costs, the quality of coaching and competition, and the degree you want.

In the US, what matters is what you pay each year after all scholarships and grants. Most athletics scholarships are partial and are combined with academic awards. Read how much a US sports scholarship really costs and try the cost calculator.

Yes. Scottish track, cross country and field event athletes earn scholarships at NCAA Division I, Division II, NAIA and junior colleges. Coaches recruit on times and marks, improvement and grades.

Do US universities accept Highers and National 5s?

Yes. US universities look at your record from S3 onwards. At least five National 5 passes show you have completed secondary school, and Highers and Advanced Highers strengthen your record and GPA.

Are Scottish exam results too late for a US scholarship?

No. Results came out on 4 August in 2026, and coaches recruit on your results so far and your predicted grades. Your final results complete your eligibility.

Can I go to the US after S5?

Some athletes do, if they have completed secondary school and meet the academic standard. We check this in your free GPA review.
